Here is Sun Descends who played Thrash Metal in the vein of old school style. Today the want to talking about a new studio album called Kanun-Law.
LN :
Greetings from Siam Metal and congratulations for the Kernun Law album.Tell us the latest news of the band.
SD :
Hi and thanks for the review of Kanun-Law. Our drummer, Javier Medina, has left the band due to personal life changes and his replacement will be announced very soon. We are in the process of auditioning drummers and it looks like that we will be able to get back to writing new music in the very near future.
LN : Can you give me a brief bio on how the band came together?
SD : I started the band in the summer of 2000 with some friends here in New York and then we recorded a demo ("tide in the affairs of men") that ended up being released on High Vaultage Records in Germany, nov.2001. The band went through numerous lie-up changes and finally went back to work in spring of 2004. The result is Kanun-Law which is meant to be a taste for things to come in the near future.
LN :
What means your name "Sun Descends"?
SD :
I was trying to find a name that combines several meanings at once. The sun usually rises in the east and I am from Turkey but I wanted to embrace the idea that our music is so strong, it can even make the sun descend in the east as well. It's somewhat esoteric sounding but it makes a lot of sense to me. The other meaning of the name is "darkness" and all our creative process takes place at night, therefore when the sun descends.
LN : Can you tell me a few words for the new album? Can you describe the style of music that you play to someone not familiar with the band?
SD : The music is rooted in thrash and traditional metal with punk and hardcore attitudes. I think that is the best way to describe it. The lyrics are based on my expericnces in the field of psychiatry, I work with mentally ill homeless people in Manhattan, and a huge chunk evolves around my Turkish background. The title song describes the battle for Constantinople in 1453, which the Ottomans won and now is Istanbul, where I was born in 1968.
LN :What have the magazines and the fans had to say about the new album? Was it something that you expected or not?
SD :
The fans and magazines were all very supportive and responded positive about the new material. I did not think that we could impress that many people but it was a wonderful surprise for us, thanks again.
LN :How do you write your music? Is there a common procedure that you follow, or everything comes naturally? Is there a main songwriter or a team effort when it comes to composing?
SD :
I usually talk with our guitarist about musical ideas and then he comes up with riffs and arrangments which he presents to us at rehearsal. Sam is really a competent song writer but the final version of a song ends up being written in the rehearsal room. Jill, our bassist, who is a classically trained musician also contributes with important ideas so that the whole band is involved in the process. the lyrical ideas and concepts are from me only and that is because I have a very clear vision for this band and I have always worked this way for the past 20 years.
LN :
What has influenced your music all those years and which was the first experience you had with Metal music?
SD : My first experience with Metal must have been when I was 11 or 12 years old and I heard Black Sabbath. I loved it so much and then shortly after that I bought 'Ace of Spades" by Motorhead and Venom's "Welcome to Hell". I consider myself very lucky to have seen Ozzy live with Randy R. and Metallica when they were promoting "kill'em all". Metal is different now but I do feel that there are still real metal heads out there, looking for true metal expression and that is what I felt when I first heard bands from "The New Wave Of British Heavy Metal" or Slayer doing "die by the sword".
LN :If you were to be anything besides a musician...what would it be?
SD: Nothing, I really don't know...music is all I live for but I do love Kung-Fu and I am a student and teacher of that art. I do work with people who have mental problems.I enjoy helping people who need help but music is my soul and passion and will always be #1.
LN :
Are any of the members of Sun Descends involved in other bands at the moment?
SD :
Sam helps out playing guitar in a local punk band here in NYC but the rest of us are only doing SD at the moment.
LN :
Now that the album is finally over, which are your plans to support it? Do you have any dates or places booked yet?
SD :
We will start playing live once we have found a permanent drummer and also work on new material as soon as possible. We have three bew songs finished and will write about six more for the new record.
